What is Sjogren’s Syndrome?
A
An autoimmune condition affecting exocrine glands.

What are the two types of Sjogren’s Syndrome?
A
Primary- condition occurs in isolation
Secondary- related to SLE or RA

How does Sjogren’s present?
A
Dry mucous membranes:
- Eyes
- Mouth
- Vagina

What test can detect Sjogren’s?
A
Schirmer Test

Outline the Schirmer Test.
A
- Fold a piece of filter paper under the lower eyelid
- Leave it there for 5 minutes
- Measure the distance along the strip that becomes moist
- In a healthy adult, it should be around 15mm
- Less than 10mm is diagnostic

What is the management of Sjogren’s?
A
- Artificial tears
- Artificial saliva
- Vaginal lubricant
- Hydroxychloroquine prevents the progression of the disease

What mucosal complications are there for Sjogren’s?
A
- Eyes- conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers
- Mouth- cavities, candida infections
- Vagina- candida, sexual dysfunction

What other organ complications does Sjogren’s have?
A
- Pneumonia/Bronchiectasis
- Non-Hodgkins lymphoma
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Vasculitis
- Renal impairment
