What is Sicca Syndrome?
Partial Sjogrens findings (dry eyes or dry mouth but not both)
What is primary Sjogrens syndrome?
No connective tissue disease is present
What is secondary Sjogrens syndrome?
- dryness with associate connective tissue disease
- lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma
What sex is more likely to suffer from Sjogrens disease?
women 10:1 men
What risk is associated with pregnancy in Sjogrens syndrome patients?
Neonatal lupus in baby
What are some potential aetiological factors of Sjogrens Syndrome?
- low oestrogen in women
- incomplete cell apoptosis leads to antigens being improperly executed
- dysregulation of inflammatory process
What are some consequences of Sjogrens syndrome?
- gradual loss of salivary/lacrimal gland tissue through inflammatory destruction
- enlargement of major salivary glands
- increased risk of lymphoma
- oral & ocular effects of loss of saliva & tears
What scoring systems are in use for detecting Sjogrens syndrome?
- American-European Consensus Group (2002)
- ACR-EULAR joint criteria (2016)
How many of the objective/subjective findings does a patient need to have to be diagnosed with Sjogrens Syndrome?
at least 4 of the findings
