What is Sjogren’s?
Autoimmune condition affecting exocrine glands, leading to dry mucous membranes
Who is Sjogren’s seen in?
F>M
Onset 40-50
What is the presentation of Sjogren’s?
Dry eyes, mouth, vagina
Parotid gland enlargement
Systemic= fatigue, fever, myalgia, arthralgia
5-10%= organ involvement
What investigations are done for Sjogren’s?
Autoantibodies= Ro, La
Schirmer test
What is the Schirmer test?
Fulter paper under eyelid and assess how far tears travel
What is the management of Sjogren’s?
Artificial tears and saliva
Vaginal lubrication
Immunosuppression= hydroxychloroquine
What are the common complications of Sjogren’s?
Conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers
Dental cavities and candida infections
Sexual dysfunction
What are the more rare and severe complications of Sjogren’s?
Lymphoma
Purpura
Interstitial lung disease
Renal tubular necrosis
