Six Qi and Pulses Flashcards

1
Q

How does the wind cause the pulse to float?

A

■ Wind damages yang-> wear clothes because heat we are generating wants to stay in and warm; warmth floats about a hair.
● If the wind blows-> the warm air goes away and the body generates more warmth; keeps pushing more warm blood to the surface and causes floating pulse and losing yin
● All pulses wiry

Q

Cold causes pulse to be tight and urgent

A

■ Cold causes the contraction of the vessels-> sends all warm blood to the heart and internal-> not cold on the outside and gets tighter
● Causing body aches and feeling cold because warm blood is going back to the interior
● Pulse is the description of what is happening functionally in the body
● Tongue is internal diagnosis-> reflection of the heart (material changes)
● urgent= the same thing as tight; take something with length and it’s a lengthwise shortening
● All pulses wiry

Q

○ Summer heat can cause floating and vacuous

A

■ Really hot and humid; humid heat and sweating cannot cool off; ambient temperature is higher than body temperature-> hard to hold onto the yin because you dehydrate fast
● Surface is wet and sweating to cool off and into hot steam which won’t let you cold (leads to yang deficiency and blood deficiency-> not able to cool off properly)
■ If you’re in an ambient temperature colder than body-> can catch a cold; hot and dry can cool because you have a drier
■ Yang is out but the inside are also getting damage because losing fluids; impoverishing your blood

Q

○ Dampness can cause soggy and unsmooth

A

■ unsmooth= dryness inside the blood; scrapping of knife
■ Lot of dampness makes the flow of pulse slower and sluggish; feels mushy; unsmooth refers to impeding of dampness
■ Slippery is less friction= actually more rapid than a normal pulse 64-68 speed of the pulse; slippery is more than 4 beats per fast; rapid is 6 per breath
■ Slippery is not phlegm; slippery is heat
■ Soggy is reduction of speed; smidge less of 4 beats per breath
■ phlegm= yin more material; impede flow of yang

Q

○ Dryness makes short and making it hasty

A

■ Not connected to position prior or ahead of it; only one position you can feel-> reserve for DONG
■ If rope is wet can stretch the rope; if rope is dry makes it shorter
■ Yang ming as disease-> long pulse because lots of qi and blood-> strong fight between zhong qi and pathology
■ hasty= dryness can cause things to catch on fire; blood harder to pump through vessels-> now heat-> create a rapid and hasty pulse-> pulse is stumbling because it is unsmooth in the vessel;
■ HASTY= cu; ge gen qin lian tang; yin= gui zhi qu shao yao tang

Generalities for the pulses

A

■ Hot moves fast
■ All pulses flooding
● Fire disease all pulses flooding
● Wind disease all pulses are wiry
● Water disease all pulses is deep
● Dryness disease all pulses are unsmooth
● Dampness disease all pulses are moderate
● Yin is the bottom ⅓ of pulses; yang is the top ⅔ of pusles
