Six Point Pocket Chart Flashcards
What BPE codes require further investigation and detailed periodontal charting
codes 3, 4 and *
What can be recorded in the six point pocket chart
- recession
- probing depth
- loss of attachment
- bleeding on probing
- furcation
- mobility
When should the six point pocket chart be recorded for BPE 3
before or after treatment of that sextant
When should the six point pocket chart be recorded for BPE 4
after treatment
What is the minimum requirement for the six point pocket chart
to record all sites of greater than 4mm probing depth and bleeding on probing
Which periodontal probes are used for 6 point pocket chart
PCP 12 UNC probe Williams probe
Which probe is this

PCP 12
Which probe is this

UNC
Which probe is this

Williams probe
What is the probing depth
the base of the gingival crevice to the gingival margin
What is recession
gingival margin the CEJ
What is loss of attachment
probing depth + recession
how is bleeding on probing scored
present = 1
absent = 0
How is furcation graded
1-3
What does furcation involvement scored 1 mean
initial furcation involvement
Initial furcation involvement. The furcation opening can be felt on probing but the involvement is less than one third of the tooth width.
What does furcation involvement scored 2 mean
Partial furcation involvement
loss of support exceeds one third of the tooth width but does not include the total width of the furcation
>3mm horizontal attachment loss but not through and through
What does furcation involvement scored 3 mean
through and through involvement
the probe can pass through the entire furcation
How is mobility graded
1-3
written on crown of the tooth
What are the 6 sites that are tested
- disto buccal
- mid buccal
- mesio buccal
- distopalatal
- mid palatal
- mesiopalatal
How should the probe tip be placed
gently until the base is reached
How should the position of the probe be placed
as parallel as possible to the tooth surface
the side of hte probe tip should be kept in contact with the tooth surface
How is horizontal mobility tested
using a finger and an instrument handle
What does grade 0 mobility mean
‘physiological’ mobility measured at the crown level
the tooth is mobile within the alveolus to approximately 0.1-0.2mm in a horizontal direction
what does grade 1 mobility mean
increased mobility of the crown of the tooth to at the most 1mm in a horizontal direciton
what does grade 2 mobility mean
visually increased mobility of the crown of the tooth exceeding 1mm in a horizontal direction
what does grade 3 mobility mean
severe mobility of the crown of the tooth in both horizontal and vertical dircetions impinging on the function of the tooth
What is the suggested order for doing the 6 point pocket chart
buccal of quadrant 1
buccal of quadrant 2
palatal quadrant 2
palatal quadrant 1
buccal of quadrant 4
buccal of quadrant 3
lingual quadrant 3
lingual quadrant 4
