Hoe Flashcards
What is the hoe?
It has a blade set at 100 degree angle and the cutting edge is bevelled at 45 degrees.
What are hoes shaped to permit?
Hoes are shaped to permit access and designed to slip into the pocket.
How many hoes are required to give access to all tooth surfaces?
A set of four hoes is required to give access to all tooth surfaces
What hoes are present in a scaling kit?
In a scaling kit there are two, double ended hoes
What is the yellow hoe
for buccal and lingual surfaces
What is the red hoe
for medial and distal surfaces
What is the hoe used for
mainly for removing subgingival calculus
How should the hoe be used
the cutting edge should be angulated at 90 degrees at the tooth surface
Ensure correct angulation is established before activating your pull stroke
This contact provides leverage and control for breaking off heavy deposits
The hoe should be used in overlapping strokes
Where is the hoe used
All surfaces of all teeth - it is useful for dislodging tenacious calculus deposits
What are the limitations of the hoe
In particularly narrow pockets, the hoes are restricted in access by their bulk and often the curette is more effective in this situation.
Why should the hoe be properly seated
The hoe must be properly seated to avoid gouging the root surface with the corner of the blade and subsequent grooves in the root surface could be mistake for subgingival calculus
Define the hoe scaler 134-135
A double ended instrument for gross supra and sub gingival scaling mainly on buccal and lingual surfaces
Define ehte hoe scaler 156-157
A double ended instrument for gross supra- and sub-gingival scaling mainly on medial and distal surfaces
