Six mark questions Flashcards

1
Q

Use the structure and bonding in graphite to explain why it is able to be used as a
lubricant and as a conductor of electricity?

A

Answer could include:

  1. Carbon atoms in hexagonal arrangement
  2. Weak forces between layers
  3. layers can slide (hence lubricant)
  4. Free electrons between layers
  5. Free electrons can move -
  6. And carry current (hence conduction of electricity)

Q

Sodium and potassium react with cold water to give similar products.
The electronic configuration of sodium is 2.8.1.
The electronic configuration of potassium is 2.8.8.1.
Explain the similarities and differences in the way sodium and potassium react
with cold water by considering their reactions and their electronic configurations.

A

Answer could include:
Similarities:
1. Same number of outer electrons/one outer
electron
2. Both produce hydrogen/fizz (when reacted with
water)
3. React in a similar way

Differences:
1. Potassium more reactive

  1. Potassium has more shells
  2. Potassium catches on fire/lilac flame

Q

Explain the difference in the ability of solid sodium chloride and molten
sodium chloride to conduct electricity in terms of their structures.

A

Answer may include:
Solid:
1.regular arrangement/ lattice
2. Ions held together by strong ionic bonds
3.charged ions closely packed together (when solid) does not conduct
because ions cannot move

Molten:

  1. Heat energy brakes strong ionic bonds
  2. Strong electrostatic forces of attraction
  3. Ions can move (therefore) conducts when molten
