Q

What are the main signs & sx of Cold Damage (aka W-C Repletion)? What is the treatment principle?

A

Wei Qi cannot defend the exterior; evil qi impedes construction qi leading to blockage of interstices:
1) No sweat
2) Aversion to cold
3) Pain more on superficial body level
4) Pulse: floating & tight
TX: Promote sweat, Release the exterior, Diffuse the lung, Calm Wheezing
Formula: Ma Huang Tang

Q

What are the main signs & sx of Wind Strike (aka W-C Vacuity)? What is the treatment principle?

A

Construction-Defence disharmony means interstices are unsound:
1) Slight sweat
2) Aversion to wind
3) Exhausted muscle-y ache (deeper than skin level)
4) Pulse: floating & moderate
TX: Harmonize Ying & Wei, Resolve the flesh, Expel the wind
Formula: Gui Zhi Tang

Q

How does a Tai Yang Channel pattern transmute into the Tai Yang Bowel pattern called Water Amassment? What is the hallmark sign of Water Amassment?

A
  • If Tai Yang exterior pattern is not resolved, evil qi can follow the channel and move into the interior, influence the UB organ.
  • If SP has been impaired, or this is a chronic situation, and UB is impaired bc of transmission from channel to bowel, this may cause internal collection of water qi, and inhibited urination.
  • Inhibited urination is a hallmark of Water Amassment.

Q

What are the main signs & sx of Water Amassment? What is the treatment principle?

A

Water Amassment is concurrent with exterior pattern:
1) Floating pulse
2) Fever/chills
3) Aversion to wind or cold
4) Inhibited urination (retention of urine)**
5) Heart vexation
6) Thirst
7) Lower abdominal distention
8) May Have bitter taste in mouth
9) Severe cases: there is thirst with desire for water but if one drinks, there will be vomiting
TX: Promote urination, Transform water qi, Resolve exterior

Q

What are the main signs & sx of Blood Amassment What is the treatment principle?

A

1) Pulse: deep, choppy
2) Mental restlessness
3) “Manic” behavior / Heart vexation (bc static blood & heat from lack of movement bind int he lower burner and invades upward, which harasses the spirit)
4) Lower abdominal distention; may have blood in urine
TX: Purge accumulation (through stool)

Q

What is another way to think about Blood Amassment?

A
  • Blood Amassment is a way to describe how cold could cause blood stasis.
  • So even though Blood Amassment is relatively “exterior” bc it’s a Tai Yang problem in relation to all Yin patterns, it’s not an exterior pattern.

Q

What is the pathomechanism that leads to Yang Ming disease?

A

Yang Ming disease may be caused by:

  • damage to fluids from incorrect treatment
  • lack of treatment of a Tai Yang or Shao Yang pattern, which permits heat evil to go internally
  • or, constitutional heat with additional exterior pathogen that goes interiorly

16
Q

What are the main signs & sx of Yang Ming Channel pattern? What is the treatment principle?

A
Yang Ming Channel pattern is evil heat throughout the body, so signs & sx are the "4 Bigs":
1) Big thirst
2) Big fever
3) Big sweat
4) Big pulse (forceful, flooding, rapid)
TX: Clear heat, Drain fire

**Note: Someone could also have Yang Ming constitution. Doesn’t have to be an illness. They’re thirsty & hungry all the time.

17
Q

What are 4 types of abdominal disharmony associated with Yang Ming Bowel pattern? What is the treatment principle?

A

1) Distention
2) Fullness
3) Dryness
4) Hardness
- Generally feeling of great heat.
- Eventually, if Yang Ming Bowel heat hangs out for awhile, it may cloud the shen and present as prickles on tongue.

18
Q

Why is Shao Yang considered a “midstage pattern”?

A
  • Tai Yang can pass to both Yang Ming & Shao Yang.
  • Shao Yang can resolve outward through constant, mild sweating.
  • Shao Yang can pass to Yang Ming to form an interior pattern.
  • Shao Yang can pass to Yin channels, giving rise to vacuity patterns.
  • Shao Yang could occur in combination with Tai Yang or Yang Ming.
19
Q

What are the main signs & sx of Shao Yang Channel pattern? What is the treatment principle?

A

Struggle between evil & right qi is between the exterior & interior:
1) Alternating F&C
2) Bitter taste in mouth
3) Hypochondriac pain, distention, or discomfort
4) Irritable
5) No appetite
6) Dizzy (could be one-sided, in GB or SJ channel)
7) Dryness in mouth
8) Pulse: wiry, string-like
TX: Harmonize the Shao Yang - Push out evil & clear interior, Regulate qi dynamic, Support right & Dispel evil

20
Q

How is Tai Yin disease the beginning stage of the later period of externally contracted disease?

A
  • Tai Yin governs opening to outside.
  • With Tai Yin disease, Right Qi becomes debilitated, and the body’s ability to fight disease is decreasing.
  • Note: If properly treated, the strength of this disease is not dangerous, since Tai Yin stage is the most superficial of the Yin stages.
21
Q

T or F: Tai Yin Disease is ONLY an Organ/Bowel pattern.

A

True

22
Q

What do Tai Yin patterns & Yang Ming patterns have in common? How are they different?

A
  • Both Yang Ming patterns & Tai Yin patterns of disease are digestive in nature.
  • However, Yang Ming = Replete patterns. While Tai Yin = Vacuous patterns.
23
Q

What is another name for Tai Yin Disease? What organ is primarily affected?

A
  • Tai Yin Disease = Tai Yin Vacuity Cold.
  • Spleen Yang is damaged when disease enters Tai Yin.
  • Cold evil enters into interior, so hinders the function of transportation & transformation.
24
Q

What are the main signs & sx of Tai Yin Vacuity Cold? What is the treatment principle?

A

1) Abdominal pain, bloating/distention (feeling of puffiness)
2) Loose stool / diarrhea
3) No appetite
4) May have vomiting / nausea
5) NO thirst
6) Tongue: pale body, white coat
7) Pulse: weak, deep
TX: Warm the center, Boost or fortify SP (aka Strengthen & bank up SP)

25
Q

How is Shao Yin disease a more critical stage in organ disease? What organs are affected?

A
  • With Shao Yin disease, there is injury to the HT & KD.
  • Yang qi is weak, Yin blood is insufficient, and body’s ability to repel disease has declined.
  • HT = Fire; governs blood vessels & shen.
  • KD = Water; governs storage of jing; true yin / true yang reside there.
26
Q

How many Shao Yin disease patterns are there? What are their names?

A

Two Shao Yin Cold patterns:

1) Yang Vacuity & Yin Exuberance
2) Yin Exuberance, Repelling Yang

One Shao Yin Heat pattern:
3) Shao Yin Heat

27
Q

What are the main signs & sx of Yang Vacuity & Yin Exuberance? What is the treatment principle?

A

Yang unable to warm any part of body:
1) Cold body & limbs (e.g. shrimp position, curled up, trying to keep organs warm)
2) Very low energy (can barely get out of bed)
3) Reverting cold of limbs (extremities are cold bc heat is reverting & leaving limbs)
4) Watery/clear diarrhea w/ undigested food
5) Vomit w/ clear, watery liquid
6) NO thirst (or if thirsty, desire warm drinks)
7) Ice cold abdomen upon palpation
8) Tongue: pale or purplish pale body, drippy wet coat (bc no fluid transformation)
9) Pulse: deep, faint, feeble
TX: Boost & warm Yang

28
Q

What is another name for Yin Exuberance, Repelling Yang?

A

True Cold, False Heat

29
Q

What are the main signs & sx of Yin Exuberance, Repelling Yang (aka True Cold, False Heat)? What is the treatment principle?

A

1) Red, flushed face *
2) Sweaty face & upper burner *
3) Cold body & limbs
4) Curled up position
5) Low energy
6) Reverting cold of limbs
7) Watery/clear diarrhea w/ undigested food
8) Vomit
9) No thirst (if thirsty, desire warm drinks)
10) Tongue: pale, wet
11) Pulse: deep, faint, feeble (or none)
TX: Warm, boost & strengthen Yang, but also restrain & anchor Yang (to restrain flare-up)

30
Q

Which is more common – Shao Yin Cold patterns or Shao Yin Heat pattern?

A

Shao Yin Heat Pattern is more rare than cold, if we are discussing the 6 Channel system.

31
Q

What are the main signs & sx of Shao Yin Heat Pattern? What is the treatment principle?

A

1) Heart vexation
2) Insomnia
3) Dry mouth / throat
4) Five center heat
5) Malar flush
6) Tongue: red tip, or red body with no coat
7) Pulse: deep, fine, rapid
TX: Nourish Yin & Clear heat

32
Q

Which is more serious – Shao Yin disease or Jue Yin disease?

A
  • Jue Yin disease is more serious than Shao Yin disease.

- Jue Yin disease (aka Reverting Yin or Terminal Yin disease) is final stage of externally contracted disease.

33
Q

Why is Jue Yin disease referred to as “Reverting” Yin disease?

A

“Reverting” refers to shifting between two extremities of cold & heat.

34
Q

How are Jue Yin patterns divided or organized?

A

Cold, Heat, Phlegm, and Roundworm types

35
Q

Why is there no specific list of signs & sx attributed to Jue Yin disease? Why is it a complicated pattern?

A
  • Signs & sx depend on what organs are affected, and their relationship to each other.
  • Jue Yin disease is due to lack of integration of Yang into blood.
  • Generally a complex of hot & cold (and possibly phlegm). Usually heat above, cold below.
  • There is a disconnect between upper body & lower body (separation of up & down).
36
Q

What are some example symptoms for Jue Yin disease?

A
  • Wasting thirst (heat)
  • Qi rising into HT, causing pain & heat (heat)
  • Vomiting of roundworms after eating, w/ chronic diarrhea (heat above, cold below)
  • Anxiety
  • Migraines
  • Cold hands & feet
37
Q

Give a quick breakdown of the 6 channels.

A
  • TAI YANG: Exterior Cold.
  • YANG MING: Interior Heat, Interior Repletion.
  • SHAO YANG: Evil that is half in, half out.
  • TAI YIN: Damage to SP by Cold.
  • SHAO YIN: HT-KD Vacuity.
  • JUE YIN: Interior Vacuity & Cold-Heat complex.
