Situation variables affecting obedience Flashcards
Key study: Milgram procedure
40 participants asked to shock the learner every time they got a question wrong. Each time the shock getting higher in voltage
Key study: Findings
All went up to 300V
65% went up to 450
Factors influencing: Proximity
When the teacher and the learner were in the same room = obedience fell to 40%
Factors influencing: Location
When done in a run down office = obedience dropped to 48% to maximum
Factors influencing: Uniform
Bushman: asked to give change for parking. policeman 72% , beggar 52%, businessman 48%
A03: Internal validity
Lack of realism: Perry said the participants were unsure whether the shocks were real. May have been more brutal if they thought it was fake
A03: Historical validity
Blass 1999, meta-analysis between 1961-85. Hasn’t changed much.
Still relevant today.
A03: Location
Lab settings - more likely to obey
