situation ethics pixl test Flashcards
what is agape?
Agape is self-less love
we should act out of love for others and try to serve their best interests.
What does the Bible say about agape?
Jesus said “Love God and love your neighbour as yourself”.
One of the four working principles is ‘personalism’ what does this mean?
people are more important than rules.
This can be seen in the Bible when Jesus said “ man was not made for Sabbath”
One of the four working principles is ‘positivism’, what does this mean?
Situation ethics begins with the belief in the reality and importance of love.
You have to start with a positive choice- you need to want to do good.
One of the four working principles is ‘pragmatism’ what does this mean?
Situation ethics is based on experience rather than on theory and for an action to be good it has to be practical.
What is the conscience to fletcher?
Conscience is a verb rather than a noun- it is something you do when you make decisions.
One of the four working principles is ‘relativism’ what does this mean?
situation ethics is based on making the absolute laws of Christian ethics relative.
Give an example of ‘relativism’?
so the absolute rules ‘do not steal’ becomes relative to love- if love demands stealing food for the hungry, you steal.
Name the first 3 propositions?
- ‘Only one ‘thing’ is intrinsically good: namely love: nothing else at all.
- ‘The ruling norm of Christian decision making is love; nothing else.
- ’ Love and justice are the same thing- for justice is love distributed nothing else’.
Name the last 3 propositions?
- ’ love wills the neighbour’s good whether we like him or not’.
- Only the end justifies the means; nothing else’.
- ’ That love decides there and then’.
