Situation + Culture Flashcards
Social norms
Unwritten social rules that are seen as acceptable by society
Resource stress
Describes when commodities are seen as scarce and an ingroup is seen in direct threat with another salient group such as with jobs/money
This can also be heightened if its a situation clled zero sum, where resources are so limited that only one group can prosper
Norm of intolerance
Every culture is ethnocentric to a degree
However even tbe most accepting cultures still carry intolerance which are just protrayed through ‘microsggressions’
Norm of fairness
Collectivisit cultures are more likely to be more concerned with fairness than comeptition
Wetherall-when replicating rhe minimal study by Tajfel in New Zealand, polynesian classmates allocated more points generously towards the outgroup than their white classmates
Strength
Orpen (1971) notes that when White South African 16 year olds did the F scale test, their results werent significantly correlated towards prejudice however it measures rhe social conformity towards norms that showed prejudice towards Black south africans
Showed rhat cultural norms play a significant role in prejudice towards outgroups
Negative
However they were 16, younger people are more likely to want to conform towards society , not representative towards older ages
