Individual Differences.1 Authoritarian Personality Flashcards
Authortarian personality
A personality type for those who are submissive towards authority figures and show levels of prejudice.
Comes from harsh parenting style during childhood that would have conditional love
Causes them to displace onto minority groups as they are safer targets
Harsh to those weaker than them
Measured using a 5 point likert scale called the F scale ( f for fascism) those who scored high on F scale - authortarian personality
External + internal LOC
Internal LOC- Show responsibility over their actions they are in control
External LOC- they are not responsible over their actions, they are not in control
Internal LOC- show dissent and defy orders whike external LOC show obedience towards orders
Real life application
Jobs now use personality tests during the recruitment process that score the LOC of a person as some jobs favour higher levels obedience or lower levels of obedience
Support
Elms used the F scale for the fully obedient participants in Millgrams experiment and saw that those who scored high on the F scale were less close to their father, showing that an authortarian personality stems from childhood
Arguement against support
However this link is between obedience and authortarian personality correlational and shows a casual link and doesnt necessarily that the particpants have an authortarian personality
