Site Preparation Plans Flashcards

Q

Dust Control on a Construction Site

A

Proper dust control on a construction site will reduce the volume of sediments produced by construction activities. Although most sediment control efforts on a construction site address the presence of sediments in stormwater, dust also produces measurable amounts of sediments and should be mitigated by proper dust control. This would consist of adding a Stabilized Construction Entrance (a mountable gravel berm that helps remove mud and dirt from vehicle tires), or if not sufficient you can add a “Wash Rack” to wash sediment off a vehicle tires. Note that dust could potentially reduce soil fertility (through the loss of top soil) but this would be a minor factor compared to the types of things the LARE cares about (i.e. BMPs).

Q

Demolition Plan

A

A “Demolition Plan” must always contain a survey base with accurate locations for all existing site elements, as well as a bold dashed line that indicates the full limits of work for the entire project. Reference notes and hardscape to be removed are other items that would need to be included on the plan

Q

Deconstruction Inventory

A

Deconstruction is a relatively new process that is meant to “Identify all site and building components that can be removed, reused or recycled” and can supplement conventional demolition activities. Deconstruction has numerous benefits, including the reduction of construction-related waste and the management of hazardous resources. Although deconstruction can cost more than conventional demolition, when used properly, it has the potential to generate additional income for projects as well.

Q

Site Protection Plan

A

A catchall term for a plan or plans that, in general, protect natural resources on a project site, sensitive areas adjacent and downstream of the project site and comply with local laws and codes. Examples of content in a Site Protection Plan include tree protection and salvage, reduce sediment pollution in local waterways, measures to salvage topsoil on-site for reuse, storage for salvaged materials (or what parts of the site it is prohibited in), call out “compaction prohibited” areas, site access, erosion control measures, wash-down area for construction equipment, and noise/dust/smoke/odor control.

Q

Surveying - Bearings

A

Always between 0 and 90 degrees, referenced from a North or South and the angle to the East or West from the north-south line. Bearings can also be expresses in smaller angle measurements than degrees and that is Minutes and Seconds. Just like time, these range from 0 to 60 each. So you could have 78 degrees 58 minutes and 43 seconds as a bearing (would be shown as N 78d 58’ 43” E for example).

Q

Surveying - Townships

A

A township is usually 6 miles tall and wide for a total of 36 square miles. They are described with Northings and Eastings and are broken down into Portion, Section, Tier, and Range (in that order). Their descriptions are started from horizontal Baselines and vertical Meridians. A description of a township and section is written as Portion, Section, Tier, Range (in that order)

Q

Surveying - Traverse

A

A traverse involves placing survey stations along a line or path of travel, and then using the previously surveyed points as a base for observing the next point. A Closed Traverse is a property line of a house, it starts at a lot corner and uses lengths and bearings to make its way around the lot back to the beginning.

Q

Surveying - Degrees of Latitude and Longitude

A

Latitude (horizontal lines around the earth) and Longitude (vertical lines around the earth) are divided into degrees (69 miles apart) minutes (1.15 miles (60 minutes (60’) per degree)) seconds (100 feet (60 seconds (60”) per minute))

Tree Protection and Removal Plan

A

Must always contain a survey base with accurate locations for trees, as well as a bold dashed line that indicates the full limits of work for the entire project. Reference notes and the location of tree protection fencing are other items that would need to be included on the plan. It should also have information such as areas of vegetation to be protected, transplanted and/or removed. A detail key list might be something on this as well.
