semi critical - items in contact with mucous membranes i.e. dental handpiece
non critical - in contact with intact skin i.e. light cure
minimal risk - not normally in contact with intact skin i.e. dental chair

how to manage a sharps injury

A
  • apply pressure and squeeze to encourage bleeding
  • wash with soap and running water - DO NOT SCRUB
  • assess injury : deep? solid instrument? hollow bore needle? device visibly contaminated?
  • determine risk of source blood: i.e. known BBV/IV drug user
  • notify clinical lead, call occupational health, source bloods, DATIX form. record injury
  • employee followed up with PEP, counselling and prevention
