how to manage a sharps injury
- apply pressure and squeeze to encourage bleeding
- wash with soap and running water - DO NOT SCRUB
- assess injury : deep? solid instrument? hollow bore needle? device visibly contaminated?
- determine risk of source blood: i.e. known BBV/IV drug user
- notify clinical lead, call occupational health, source bloods, DATIX form. record injury
- employee followed up with PEP, counselling and prevention
