Single & multicellular organisms Flashcards
Single-celled organisms have to?
be able to perform all of the functions of life in each cell and have to be small to maintain efficiency
Single-celled organisms were the?
earliest cells
What can multicellular organisms do?
specialize to perform a specific function to maintain efficiency.
Multicellular organisms:
To maintain efficiency larger organisms are multicellular, made of many cells
Advantages general:
When cells are specialized for one particular function - performing more effectively and efficiently
Disadvantages of interdependence of a single cell:
interdependence: When a single-celled organism dies that is the end.
Advantages of size for the multicellular cells:
Size: internal transport systems like the circulatory systems allow for the efficient exchange of materials.
advantages of interdepence for multicellular cells:
does not depend on a single cell. If a cell in a multicellular organism dies, it does not kill the organism.
Disadvantage of the size of a single cell:
The surface area to volume ratio and the rates of diffusion restrict the size of single-celled organisms.
