Active transport Flashcards
Active transport
Process that enables materials to move across a cell membrane
against a concentration gradient. Requires energy (ATP)
Two types:
Pumps, bulk transport
definition of
Pumps:
Movement of molecules against the concentration gradient
using a protein, and requiring energy (ATP)
Bulk Transport:
Movement of large molecules in a membrane-bound sac across
the membrane
Bulk transport 4 types:
Endocytosis, Pinocytosis, Exocytosis, Phagocytosis
Endocytosis:
Process by which large molecules exit the cell
Pinocytosis:
small, dissolved substances are taken up by membrane folding
Exocytosis
a process of taking material into the cell by pockets in the cell membrane
Phagocytosis
particles being taken in are solid and large
