Define Colonial style house
Usually 2 stories above ground, with or without basement. Bedrooms typically on 2nd level.
Define ranch or rambler style house
Usually 1 story with or without basement. open floor plan
Define Cape Cod
1 1/2 stories with or with our basement. Will have knee walls and/or dormers.
Define Split foyer
Usually 2 stories. Front door opens to landing with stairs up and down.
Define split level
Usually 2-3 levels. Front entry is on level between upper and lower floor. utilizes short stair runs. Bedrooms typically on upper floor.
Define Balloon frame
Similar layout as colonial. Continuous wall stud construction from basement to attic, without fire stops. Opposite of platform construction. Could lead to rapid fire spread.
Define hybrid style house
New style, variation of several different types. Typically wood frame and are 2 separate occupancies separated by a firewall in a 1 story portion. That space can be a shed, garage or breezeway.
Define McMansion/Estate home
Large sq ft 3000-to over 6000. typically wood frame, large amounts of open attic space.
Define cluster homes
Community of single family detached homes, light weight construction very close proximity (10’ or less). narrow lanes between homes allows rapid fire spread.

Steel frame windows set in concrete or masonry. Found in the 40’s-60’s
What are basement egress windows?
Indicates possible bedroom in basement. By code must have 2 exits. Bottom of window should be no more than 44” off floor.
What are the 2 general types of exterior doors?
Which way to they open?
Solid wood and insulated metal. Exterior doors are inward opening.
How are interior doors constructed? What rooms have door that open inward and outward?
Typically hollow core wood doors. Inward opening doors are bedrooms and bathrooms, outward opening are closets and basement stairs.
