Flammable liquid incidents Flashcards
What is a combustable liquid?
Liquid having a flash point above 100° and below 200°F
What is Primary containment at a fixed facility?
Tanks and piping where product is contained under normal circumstances
What is secondary containment at a fixed facility?
Diked area around tanks where product will be contained in initial stages of an incident. Also includes controlled drainage from rack or diverted to from other areas.
What is Tertiary containment at a fixed facility?
Additional area where product can be contained in the event of a catastrophic incident. Product may be diverted.
What is a flammable liquid?
Liquid having a low flash point below 100°F and a vapor pressure not exceeding 40 psi
What units respond for a foam task force?
2 AR foam units, 1 pump and roll unit, 2 engines, 1 BC, 1 haz-mat asset
Offensive attack mode?
Commitment of resources to aggressive leak, spill and fire. Used where additional risk is justified because rescue operations can be quickly achieved, spill leak can be quickly contained, fire extinguished.
Defensive attack mode?
Uses resources to achieve less aggressive objectives such as limiting the overall size or spread of the problem. Used where its not worth the risk involved but where other actions can be taken to mitigate the hazard and protect exposures.
Non-intervention mode?
Taking no immediate action other than isolating the area until the risk of intervention is reduced to an acceptable level. May be used while assembling resources to commence an offensive attack.
What is a polar solvent?
Flammable liquids that mix readily with water. i.e.- alcohols, ketones, lacquers.
Small spill?
Spill from container or package approx. 55 gallons or less, a small cylinder or a small leak from a large container with a minimum flow.
Large Spill?
Spill exceeding 55 gallons or multiple spills from multiple small packages or containers. Large spill responses include any incident involving pipelines, horizontal tanks, tank farms, flammable liquid tanker trucks or rail cars.
First Engine company actions Flammable liquid?
Size-up( visual indicators of smoke, vapor clouds, active leaks, odors.), Life hazards, Hazard protection for life safety, rescue measures if necessary.
First engine should perform ______ of the suspected hazard area for leak/spill/fire?
Recon
When resources are not readily available or delayed strong emphasis must be given towards what?
Identification and protection of exposures.
