Sin, Forgiveness, & Reconciliation Flashcards
How was sin brought into this world?
By Adam and Eve disobeying God.
What is sin?
An action thats goes against god’s will
The 3 conditions of sin
- Sufficient knowledge or reflection- the person knows full well what they are doing
- Full consent of the will- they made the decision themselves, and understand the extent of the act.
- Serious (GRAVE) matter—causes real evil to oneself or another person. It is a ‘grave’ matter, the act is evil and immoral.
2 Main types of sin?
- A Sin of Commission,
Knowingly choosing sin over good. Knowingly disobeying God. Individual sin. Ex stealing. - A Sin of Omission
Failing to do what is right. Choosing not to act. A group sin. Remaining silent. Ex. watching a fight and doing nothing.
3 main degrees of sin?
Moral, Social, Venial
Moral sin
MORTAL SIN- a sin that turns away from God’s offer of love and respect for all life.
We don’t commit mortal sins by accident.
Ex. Murder
Social sin
SOCIAL SIN- a sin that has an effect on others around you. It can be
a group or community doing this together.
Ex Holocaust, allowing poverty, group bullying
Venial sin
VENIAL SIN- Does not completely separate us from God but represents a ‘cooling’ in the relationship.
Ex. crude behavior, little ‘white’ lies, etc
Forgiveness
To show mercy towards others and let go of revenge wanted against them
Reconciliation
To bring people together and renew our relationship with God
Conversion
A kind of change of heart that turns a person away from sin and towards God.
What are the 3 conditions of Reconciliation?
- CONTRITION- The person who has done wrong must acknowledge what they have done wrong, and be genuinely sorry.
- CONFESSION- The person who has done the wrong must be willing to admit to the person they wronged exactly what they did and explain why it was wrong.
- CORRECTION- The person who has done the wrong must do what they can to make amends and repair the damage.
