Q

moral principles of temptations

A

temptations NOT cause sin, we can always resist temptation (not forced to sin, God won’t give what we can’t handle (out of love)), we need to fight temptations from the beginning (don’t play around w thoughts), never put ourselves in temptations unnecessarily

Q

physical evil

A

evil that hinders us from doing thing sin our nature (eg man can’t walk)

20
Q

moral evil

A

adultery, lying, stealing, killing

21
Q

why is there evil?

A

bc of original sin (it’s fair to inherit orig sin bc we don’t deserve heaven)

22
Q

types of sins

A

original, material/formal, mortal/venial, sins against holy spirit, external/internal, capital

23
Q

material sin

A

sins in themselves; did something bad but didn’t know

24
Q

formal sin

A

usual sins (know that they’re sins)

25
mortal sins
done w/ full knowledge & consent, grave matter, effects: soul dies; lose internal life, inherit hell; closer to devil, more disposed to fall into more sins
26
venial sins
effects; soul loses beauty & grace; doesn't die, merits temporal punishment (purgatory), disposed to commit more sins
27
sins against holy spirit
especially grave bc HS already tells us it's wrong but we don't listen, cry out to heaven for vengeance, can't be forgiven = rejects grace of HS, hardened heart
28
types of sins against hs
sins against those weaker (abortion, poor, abuse employers), sins of impenitence (rationalize & hardened self, person not repentant, can't be forgiven bc person refuses forgiveness)
29
external
actions that can be witnessed, thoughts that are carried out; harm done
30
internal
thoughts & desires (what's internal makes up who we are), inside the heart, beginning of external sins, very easy to commit = dangerous, can kill person internally, can easily destroy the conscience, deformed: when consciences stops "bugging" you
31
kinds/sources of internal sins
imagination (thinking about sinful thing), taking pleasure in it, planning to carry out the action, memory-replaying bad/sinful memories
32
capital
source of all other sins
33
pride
disorderly desire for excellence (for oneself), self-seeking, doesn't recognize limitations, doesn't have self-knowledge
34
remedy of pride
humility: being in the truth, looking @our Lord as an example
35
avarice
disorderly desire for wealth/material gain (greed), can't grasp onto spiritual things bc grasping onto earthly/material things
36
remedy for avarice
poverty & detachment from material goods, realize that things of this world are nothing, look @ life of Lord: creator but had nothing ("when He had nothing, He had everything")
37
lust
always grave, involves emotions, highest form of love is disrupted, conscience is clouded, person becomes inconsistent/fragile/makes rash judgments , self-seeking/selfishness
38
remedy for lust
avoid occasion of sin, use time wisely; no to idleness, temperance, sincerity & humility, PRAYER
39
envy
sadness/anger/bitterness @ others' excellence of fortune, rejoice in their failure, find fault/malice in everything: calumny, gossip, goes against charity: need to love neighbors
40
remedy for envy
see Christ in others, consider the evil envy can produce
41
gluttony/drunkenness
disorderly desire for food & drink, belly is god (we please it), mind becomes dull = lazy/sloth & lust (sensuality)
42
remedy for gluttony
know that food is a tool not an end even though it's good and needed for us to live, temperance, spirit of mortification, avoid bad company, have higher ideals = noble
43
anger
disorderly desire for revenge = hatred, violence, blasphemy, makes person do things he will later be sorry for, "hate the sin not the sinner"
44
remedy for anger
patience, meekness, see example of our Lord: patient w us
45
sloth
goes against nature of man: work, neglect one's responsibilities, greatest laziness: spiritual sloth (lukewarmness)
46
remedy for sloth
meditate on reward waiting for us, see evil sloth can produce
