Sin Flashcards
sin
absence of good, an evil, to be abhorred
St. Thomas Aquinas definition
an aversion against God bc turn towards creatures/material things (going against our nature; doing violence against self bc we don’t attain our end)
essence of sin
not just the act of disobeying but the personal desire behind the act = done freely
commission of sin
DOING something (internal/external thoughts, actions, desires)
omission of sin
NOT DOING good
cause of sin
will/when we say yes
factors of sin
temptation
temptation
caused by the devil, not necessarily bad
steps of temptation
suggestion (evil presented as attractive), pleasure (gives delight & enjoyment), consent (person chooses consent or resists)
sources of temptation
flesh, world, devil
temptation of flesh
food & drink (gluttony/drunkenness), laziness (“comfort”), lust (sensual pleasure)
temptation of world
fame, glory, power
temptation of devil
provoking/taunting, has powers but can’t invade our will -> NOT CAUSE OF SIN, can work on our imagination & senses, physical changes: possesions
why allow devil to come
God doesn’t allow something we can’t handle to happen = makes us stronger, put to the test
moral principles of temptations
temptations NOT cause sin, we can always resist temptation (not forced to sin, God won’t give what we can’t handle (out of love)), we need to fight temptations from the beginning (don’t play around w thoughts), never put ourselves in temptations unnecessarily
occasions of sin
proximate, remote
proximate occasion of sin
situation you are bound to fall in sin, never put self in proximate occ of sin, make it a remote sin
remote occasion of sin
situations but won’t really fall into sin
