Conscience Flashcards
conscience
a function of the intellect that follows principles in judging whether an act is good or bad. NOT power/capacity/potency (quality that enables one to do something) but judgment can’t exist w/o power. follows moral/divine laws
how to judge
conscience ->sees-> action ->looks @-> law. if follows, good, if against, bad
obey
have to obey conscience (authority to obey from God), even if conscience is wrong (as long as it’s not your fault)
disobey
disobedience to conscience -> violence to oneself, unless conscience is wrong through your own fault
types of conscience
true/good/upright and false/wrong/erroneous
types of wrong conscience
scrupulous, lax, pharisaical, perplex, doubtful
scrupulous
exaggerates gravity of sin because of anxiety/fear of God, healed through trust in God
lax
downplays gravity of sin because of lack of education, worst: hardened, healed through prayer/confession/discover God’s love
pharisaical
meticulous of sins but downplays gravity of sin because of vanity, healed through being humble
perplex
confusion in looking at sins: seeing sin in doing and not doing an act (eg not going to mass when mom’s sick) because of lack of education, have to choose better good, healed through seeking advice
doubtful
not actually a conscience because no judgement made, don’t know if good or bad act
types of conscience (in relation to assent)
certain, probable, doubtful
certain
sure of judgments, conviction
probable
not 100% sure but moving towards good (judgment still made)
doubtful (assent)
suspending judgement
