Simultaneous Equations Flashcards
1
Q
What are the six steps for solving easy simultaneous equations?
A
- Rearrange both equations (1 & )
- Match up the numbers in front (coefficients) (label these 3 & 4)
- Add or subtract the two equations to eliminate the terms with the same coefficients.
- Solve the resulting equation.
- Substitute the value you found back into equation 1 and solve it.
- Substitute both these values into equation 2 to make sure it works.

Q
What are the seven steps for solving tricky (quadratic) simultaneous equations.
A
- Rearrange the quadratic equations ( 1 & 2)
- Substitute the quadratic expression into the other equation (3)
- Rearrange to get a quadratic equation and solve it
- Stick the first value back into one of the original equations
- Stick the second value back in the same original equation
- Substitute both pairs of the answer into the other original equation to check they work
- Write the pairs of answers out.
