Simple Machines Flashcards
What is work?
Force times distance
What are the 6 main simple machines?
- Wedge
- Pulley
- Lever
- Wheel + axle
- Screw
- Inclined plane
What do all simple machines do?
They make work easier
What does a wedge do?
It has reduced surface area;
the most force gets applied at the smallest point
What does a pulley do?
A pulley is a wheel attached to a rope;
for every pulley added, force gets cut in half and distance increases
What does a lever do?
A lever is a board on a balanced support called a fulcrum;
levers allow you to do more work for less
What does a wheel and axle do?
A wheel and axle is a wheel attached on a stick or rod;
makes work easier by increasing force
What does a screw do?
A screw is shaped as a cylinder and it has a helical pattern;
it’s used to fasten things or modifies force
What does a inclined plane do?
A inclined place is a sloped surface;
Inclined planes make work easier by increasing distance and reducing force
