simple invertebrates Flashcards
animal pyhlum comprising the sponges
Porifera
Any of various invertebrate animals of the phylum Cnidaria, characterized by a radially symmetrical body with a saclike internal cavity and stinging nematocysts, and including the jellyfishes, hydras, sea anemones, and corals
Cnidaria
Any of various worms or wormlike animals of the phylum Annelida, characterized by an elongated, cylindrical, segmented body and including the earthworms and the leeches
Annelida
a coelenterate of an order that includes the hydras. They are distinguished by the dominance of the polyp phase.
Hydroid
a free-swimming marine coelenterate with a jellylike bell- or saucer-shaped body that is typically transparent and has stinging tentacles around the edge
Jellyfish
a phylum of worms having bilateral symmetry and a soft, usually flattened body, comprising the flatworms.
Platyhelminthes
any unsegmented worm of the phylum Nematoda, having an elongated, cylindrical body; a roundworm.
Nematoda
a small nematode worm that is an internal parasite of vertebrates.
Pinworms
a parasitic flatworm, the adult of which lives in the intestine of humans and other vertebrates. It has a long ribbonlike body with many segments that can become independent, and a small head bearing hooks and suckers.
Tapeworms
an aquatic mollusk that has a compressed body enclosed within a hinged shell, such as oysters, clams, mussels, and scallops.
Bivalves
an active predatory mollusk of the large class Cephalopoda, such as an octopus or squid.
Cephalopods
a mollusk of the large class Gastropoda, such as a snail, slug, or whelk.
Gastropods
main body cavity in most multicellular animals and is positioned inside the body to surround and contain the digestive tract and other organs.
Coelomate
one belonging to the group comprising the flatworms and nemerteans and characterized by bilateral symmetry and a digestive cavity that is the only internal cavity.
Acoelomate
symmetry around a central axis, as in a starfish or a tulip flower.
Radial Symmetry
lack of equality or equivalence between parts or aspects of something; lack of symmetry.
Asymmetry
the property of being divisible into symmetrical halves on either side of a unique plane.
Bilateral Symmetry
a slender flexible limb or appendage in an animal, especially around the mouth of an invertebrate, used for grasping, moving about, or bearing sense organs.
Tentacle
explosive cell containing one giant secretory organelle or cnida
Cnidocyte
the outermost layer of cells or tissue of an embryo in early development, or the parts derived from this, which include the epidermis and nerve tissue.
Ectoderm
the innermost layer of cells or tissue of an embryo in early development, or the parts derived from this, which include the lining of the gut and associated structures.
Endoderm
a female reproductive organ in which ova or eggs are produced, present in humans and other vertebrates as a pair.
Ovary
male egg-shaped glands
