Simple harmonic motion Flashcards
What are the 3 criteria that must be met for motion to be in SHM?
1: An object must be moving back and forth over an equilibrium point
2: The force of the object must always point back to the equilibrium.
3: The force must get bigger the further away it is from its equilibrium.
What is an example of something people think is in SHM but isn’t?
A bouncing ball
What is restoring force and how does it give SHM?
Restoring force is the force in which brings a body back to its original position, therefore, brings an object back to its equilibrium meeting requirements for SHM
Are displacement and acceleration in the same direction?
They are opposites of each other.
If you are given the spring constant of a spring and its weight force of the mass attached to its end. Can you calculate its period?
Yes. You can use the formula T=2(pi)/- m/k
How do you increase the period of a spring-mass system?
have an increased mass and a smaller spring constant.
What force specifically causes the SHM of a pendulum?
Gravity force
Why does gravity force cause the SHM of a pendulum?
It easily helps object meet the SHM criteria therefore causing this motion.
How much potential energy does a pendulum have at its mid point?
1/2 its potential
How much kinetic energy does a spring-mass system have at maximum displacement?
0 joules
If the total energy of a system in SHM is 3 Joules, at some point the potential energy of the system is at 1 joule. What is the kinetic energy at this points?
Near its maximum
What is natural frequency?
The frequency a system wants to operate at
What is a forced frequency?
Forcing a frequency
