Simple Distillation Flashcards
1
Q
What is distillation?
A
A method used to separate a solute from a solvent and allows you to keep both the solute and solvent
2
Q
Describe what happens throughout the process
A
- The water heats up and boils (at 100 degrees), leaving the salt behind
- The water vapour passes the thermometer at 100 degrees and enters the condenser
- In the condenser the water vapour condenses to liquid water. This happens because cool water cools the gas turning it to a liquid
- Pure water leaves the condenser as a liquid and goes into a beaker/conical flask
