simple ai study Flashcards
What is natural selection?
Animals or plants with better traits survive and make more babies
What are the 3 types of adaptations?
Structural, Physiological, Behavioral.
What is a structural adaptation?
A body part that helps it survive, like sharp claws or thick fur.
What is a physiological adaptation?
somthing that changes in the body to help adapt like making venom in a snake
What is a behavioral adaptation?
Something it does to survive, like hiding or hunting in groups.
What is artificial selection?
Humans picking traits they like and breeding animals or plants for them.
Give example of artificial selection.
Dog breeds
Good things about artificial selection?
Better crops, more food, disease resistance.
Bad things about artificial selection?
Health problems, less variety in genes.
Natural vs. Artificial selection?
Natural = nature picks. Artificial = humans pick.
What is speciation?
When one species splits into two or more new ones.
What is adaptive radiation?
One species turns into many new ones with different traits.
What are the Three Sisters?
Corn, beans, and squash grown together.
How do the Three Sisters help each other?
Corn holds beans, beans fix soil, squash blocks weeds.
What is genetic diversity?
Having lots of different genes in a group.
What is monoculture?
Only growing one crop type.
Why is low genetic diversity bad?
It’s easier for disease to wipe them out.
How can we make farms better?
Grow many types of crops, like nature does.
What is extinction?
When a whole species dies out.
How many big extinctions?
Five big ones in Earth’s history.
Who made modern corn?
Indigenous people picked and bred it over time.
What did they want in corn?
More food, strong plants, fewer diseases.
What crops came from wild mustard?
Kale, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, etc.
What plant parts were changed in mustard?
Stem, leaves, flower buds, and more.
