Simons and Chabris Flashcards
How does Simon and chabris link to the Cog area?
Builds on Morays work by investigating visual attention which explains why we may not recall information that we see
what is the background to smion and chabris
Previous studies show increasing intrest in the issue of the precision of visual representations.
Becklen and Cervone: (umbrella woman) results show majority of observers did not report seeing an unexpected event even though visible
aim of simon and chabris
to examine inattentional blindness for complex objects and events in dynamic scenes
sample for Simon and chabris
228 participant almost all were undergraduates was a self-selected sample and received a large candy bar or a payed single fee. 36 of ppts results were discarded.
controlled observation sample: 12 watched video with gorilla
research method for simon and chabris
Lab experiment that used an independent measures design

procedure of simon and chabris
21 experimenters tested the ppts to ensure standardisation there was a written protecall. all ppts were tested individually and gave informed concent in advanced. before viewing the video ppts were told they would be watching two teams of three players passing a basketball and they should pay attention to either black or white team. they were told to keep silent mental count of number of passes after viewing ppts were immediately asked to write down their count. then they were asked surprise questions like “did you notice anything other than the 6 player” after any ‘yes’ response ppts were asked to provide detail of what they saw and after were asked if they had heard or previously participantated in the experiment if do data was discarded. ppts were then debriefed which included a replay of the video.
finding of simon chabris
-9 reported to have lost count
-7 recored incorrect number of passes
-5 answer not correctly interpreted
-54% noticed unexpected event / more noticed in opaque event being 67%.
-little difference between black and white team in umbrella video B=62 W=66
conclusion sumon chabris
Individuals have a sustained inattentional blindness for dynamic events.
Individuals fail to notice an ongoing and highly salient but unexpected event if they are engaged in a primary monitoring task.
