Q

similarities in meiosis and mitosis

A

Both are a type of cell division

Both occur in humans and other animals

They both replicate genetic material

They both go through Prophase, Interphase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase and Cytokinesis

They both involve cells

Q

differences in meiosis and mitosis

A

Mitosis takes place all over the body, meiosis only takes place in the sex organs

Meiosis only produces gametes whilst mitosis can replicate a variety of different cells

Meiosis produces 4 daughter cells, not 2

Meiosis produces haploid cells, mitosis produces diploid cells

Mitosis has one round of division, meiosis has two

In mitosis the daughter cells have 46 chromosomes, in meiosis each gamete has 23

The gametes are genetically different from the mother cell, whilst in mitosis the cells are genetically identical (clones)
