modern farming techniques Flashcards
What is intensive farming?
It is farming that uses machines, fetilisers, man-power and high-yield crops to maximise the amount of food produced.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of intensive farming?
ADVANTAGES
- higher yield
- more efficient use of food
- quality control easier
DISADVANTAGES
- costly additives needed
- risk of antibiotic resistance
- considered unethical by some people
- decreases biodiversity in farms
what is organic farming?
organic farms do not use machines to the same extent as intensive farming. they do not apply pesticides to their crops and use natural fertilisers such as compost and manure. they rotate their crops to avoid monoculture
What are the advantages and disadvantaged of organic farming?
ADVANTAGES
- organic
- no ethical problems
- promotes biodiversity
- keeps soil healthy
DISADVANTAGES
- expensive
- less yield than intense farming
why is intensive farming used?
it can mean keeping livestock in smaller pens with regulated temperatures. This reduces the energy they need for movement and temperatures. This reduces the energy they need for movement and temperature regulation and so maximise their size and yield.
Why is organic farming used?
because unlike intensive farming
it promotes biodiversity and decreases pollution
