Silvics Flashcards
What are the aspects of abiotic habitat?
Climatic -geographic -elevation -BEC units Physiographic -edaphic soils -topography moisture/nutrients
What is ecological amplitude?
The range of conditions over which a tree can survive and reproduce.
Whats included in life history?
- flowering and fruiting
- seed production and dissemination
- seedling development
- saplings to maturity (growth rate, productivity)
- longevity
What are some factors in genetics?
Variability
Natural Hybrids
Breeding
What would be included in the silvical character of a tree?
- Reproduction
- Natural Regen
- Growth rate
- Competition

- Productivity
- Tolerances
What are some different tolerances
- Shade
- Cold
- Flooding
- Nutrient
- drought
What are some damaging agents?
- insects
- disease
- fire
- ice-snow-frost
- wind
What should we consider when selecting a species?
Ecological factors (requirements of tree) Management (objectives and goals)-what tree do you want?Amount? Evaluate and rank options (max sustainable yield, crop reliability, feasibility)
what does crop reliability and silvicultural feasibility mean? how do they differ?
Crop reliability refers to how likely a crop is to make it to maturity when taking into account potential diseases or detrimental climate effects.
Silvicultural feasibility takes into account the cost of operatiomns and what potential factors could make a project too costly. ex. Deer will destroy certain saplings, what are the management costs of putting up protection.
