Why was Nanak called a guru?

A

The word guru means teacher (God’s teacher).
Ten human gurus were guided by God’s voice and taught people about God. The first one was Guru Nanak, born in 1469 he was actually born a Hindu but travelled 30,000 miles to spread his message.

Nanak founded a model community at Kartarpur where everyone worked and prayed together.

Where did Nanak say he had been when he disappeared in the river for 3 days?

With God. Guru Nanak doesn’t want to follow Hinduism or Islam so he is choosing his own path.
His teachings:
1. COmmon sense and reason
2. Oppose laws you think are wrong
3. Finding God within.

What is the name of the Sikh holy book?

A

It is called the Guru Granth Sahib and it is seen as the last guru. As such it is treated with respect. It is considered the living guru.
The fifth Guru checked and signed the original copy in 1604 and housed it in the Golden Temple.

More about the Guru Granth Sahib

A

It means a master book by the teacher.
It contains a collection of hymns, poems and other writings from scholars.
36 non-gurus contributed to it including Hindu’s and Muslims.
Guru Arjun Deu presented the final version of the book.
Each copy has 1,430 pages inside.
Sikhs believe it should be treated as a real human being.

A

Ragas are particular sequences of notes intended to create a particular mood. Overall there are 31 magor raja’s in the Guru Granth Sahib.
