Who was Buddha?

A

Buddha is not a God. He is a human being who became enlightened..

Where and when was Buddha born?

A

He was born a Prince Siddattha Gotama in Lumbini which is in modern day Nepal around the fifth century BC (about 2500 years ago)

How is Buddha often depicted?

A

He is often depicted MEDITATING under a bodhi tree (a fig tree) in Bodh Gayam India, where he achieved his enlightenment. He vowed never to leave until he realised the truth.

Why does he have long ears?

A

This represents his rejection of of his past life as a Prince when he had worn large ear jewellery. As a result his ears were left stretched and elongated.

Where did Buddha’s first teaching take place?

A

In a deer park. Even the deer stopped and listened to him teaching. Buddha delivered his first teaching to five companions with whom he sought enlightenment. His teachings were called DHAMMA.

Why is Buddha shown with a halo around his head?

A

To symbolise his enlightenment. It is NOT intended to show he is a god, angel or saint.

What did Buddha do during his lifetime?

A

He travelled around India and Nepal for 45 years teaching THE MIDDLE WAY ( the way to happiness) what he had discovered through his enlightenment. He died at 80.His death was called PARINIBBANA and he was cremated.

What are the Buddhist scriptures called?

A

Tipitaka, which translated can mean ‘three baskets’. Some people say it is called this as it was written on long leaves which were stored in baskets. It was originally written in Pali and therefore is also known as the Pali Canon.

A

This is a story found in the Tipitaka. Buddha told the story because people were arguing about which preachers teachings were correct.
