Signs and Symptoms Flashcards
embolus
The obstruction of a blood vessel by a blood clot. The embolus will become lodged in a blood vessel that is smaller than it is, resulting in occlusion of that artery.
infarct
dead tissue because of cell necrosis due to loss of blood supply
ischemia
the localized and temporary deficiency of blood supply due to instruction to the circulation
orthostatic hypotension
the sudden drop on blood pressure a person experiences when standing up straight suddenly
plaque
fatty substance deposits in an artery
thrombus
a bood clot forming within a blood vessel. May partially or completely occlude the blood vessel.
angina pectoris
chest pain
severe pain with a sensation of constriction around the heart. Caused by a defieciency of oxygen to the heart muscle.
arrhythmia
irregularity in the heartbeat or action. Some are not life-threatening while others are.
cardiac arrest
complete stopping of heart activity.
Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
pathological condition of the heart in which there is a reduced outflow of blood from the left side of the heart because the left ventricle has become too weak to efficiently pumps blood.
Results: weakness, breathlessness, and edema.
Coronary artery disease (CAD)
Insufficient blood supply to the heart muscle due to the obstruction of one or more coronary arteries. May be caused by atherosclerosis and may cause angina pectoris and myocardial infarction.
fibrillation
an extremely serious arrhythmia characterized by an abnormal quivering or contraction of heart fibers. When this happens in the ventricles, death can occur.
heart valve prolapse
condition in which the cusps or flaps of the heart valve are too loose and fail to shut tightly, allowing blood to flow backward through the valve when the heart chamber contracts. May affect any of the heart valves, but most commonly the mitral valve.
heart valve stenosis
condition in which the cusps or flaps of the heart valve are too stiff and unable to open fully or shut tightly.
myocardial infarction (MI)
heart attack
coronary artery or arteries being partially or completely closed.
