Pharmacology Flashcards
ACE Inhibitor drugs
produce vasodilation and decrease blood pressure
e.g benazepril, Lotensin; catopril, Capoten
antiarrhythmic
reduces or prevents cardiac arrhythmias
e.g flecainide, Tambocor; ibutilide, Corvert
anticoagulant
prevents blood clot formation
e.g heparin; warfarin, Coumadin
antilipidemic
reduces amount of cholesterol and lipids in the bloodstream; treats hyperlipidemia.
e.g atorvastatin, Lipitor; simvastatin, Zocor
antiplatelet agents
inhibit the ability of platelets to climb together as part of a blood clot
e.g clopidpgrel, Plavix; aspirin; propranolol, Inderal
beta-blocker drugs
Treat hypertension and angina pectoris by lowering the heart rate.
e.g. metoprolol, Lopressor; propranolol, Inderal
calcium channel blocker drugs
Treat hypertension, angina pectoris, and congestive heart failure by causing the heart to beat less forcefully and less often
e.g diltiazem, Cardizem; nifedipine, Pericardia
cardiotonic
increases the force of cardiac muscle contraction; treats congestive heart failure
e.g digoxin, Lanoxin
diuretic
increases urine production by the kidneys, which works to reduce plasma and therefore blood volume, resulting in lower blood pressure.
e.g furosemide, Lasix
thrombolytic
dissolving existing blood clots
e.g tissue plasminogen activator (tPA); alteplase, Activase
vasoconstrictor
contracts smooth muscle in walls of blood vessels; raises blood pressure.
e.g metaraminol, Aramine
vasodilator
relaxes the smooth muscle in the wall of arteries , thereby increasing diameter of the blood vessel. Used for two main purposes: increasing circulation to an ischemic area and reducing blood pressure
e.g nitroglycerine, Nitro-Dur; isoxsuprine, Vasodilan
