Chadwick’s sign
probable sign of pregnancy
violet coloration of the mucous membranes of the cervix, vagina, and vulva that occurs at about 4 weeks of pregnancy; caused by increased vascularity
ballottement
Rebounding of the fetus against the examiner’s finger on palpation. When the examiner taps the cervix, the fetus floats upward in the amniotic fluid. The examiner feels a rebound when the fetus falls back.
Goodell’s sign
probably sign of pregnancy
softening of the cervix that occurs at the beginning of the second month of gestation
Hegar’s sign
probably sign of pregnancy
compressibility and softening of the lower uterine segment that occurs at about week 6 of gestation
Nagele’s rule
estimated date of birth (assuming 28-day menstrual cycle)
- 3 mo + 7 days + 1 year to day 1 LMP
OR
+ 7 days to day 1 LMP + 9 months
quickening
maternal perception fo fetal movement for the first time
usually in week 16 - 20 of pregnancy
