Signs Flashcards
Brace
are perpendicular lines with brackets that have two purposes: to join two or more staves, indicating that they should be read simultaneously; and to cpnnect staves of similar ensemble instruments, such as the two violins of a string quartet.
bar line
a vertical line used in a musical score to mark a division between bars.
Double Bar line
double barline consists of two lines, both the width of single barlines, positioned half a space apart by default. It isoften used to denote significant changes in the music, or to mark the placement of rehearsal marks, key signature changes, and tempo changes.
Legato slur
A slur is a symbol in Western musical notation indicating that the notes it embraces are to be played without separation (that is, with legato articulation). A slur is denoted with a curved line generally placed over the notes if the stems point downward, and under them if the stems point upwards.
Tie
In music notation, a tie is a curved line connecting the heads of two notes of the same pitch, indicating that they are to be played as a single note with a duration equal to the sum of the individual notes’ values.
Accent
The most common symbol is the horizontal wedge, the first symbol in the diagram above. This is the symbol that most musicians mean when they say accent mark. It indicates that the marked note should have an emphasized beginning and then taper off rather quickly. Though it is usually simply referred to as an accent.
Mezzo-staccato
The mezzo-staccato (AKA portato or articulated legato) isa combination of atenutoand staccato (over one note) or a slur and staccato (over more than one note). It directs you to play the phrase with a smooth yet pulsingarticulation.
Whole note rest
Blackened rectangular block hanging down from the second line
Half note rest
Blackened rectangular block sitting on the 3rd line
