Significant Figures Flashcards
What is rule 1 of significant figures?
Every non zero digit is significant
What is rule 2 of significant figures?
Zeros to the left of the first non zero digit are not significant
What is rule 3 of significant figures?
Zeros in between nonzero digits are significant
What is rule 4 of significant figures?
Zeros to the right of a nonzero digit and to the right of a decimal point are significant
What is rule 5 of signficant figures?
Zeros to the left of a decimal point are considered significant, but are not significant if serve as placeholders. If a decimal point does not exist, then any trailing zeros are not significant.
What must be done when adding and subtracting?
Identify the least precise measurement (aka the one with the least amt. of decimal places) and then round the final answer to match that. (1.1 + 1.21 = 1.31 = 1.3)
What must be done when dividing and multiplying?
Count the significant figures of each number and then round the final answer to match the number with the least amount of significant figures.
