Naming Compounds Flashcards

1
Q

What are polyatomic ions?

A

They are compounds consisting of two or more elements/ions. They consist of both a cation and anion. When naming these, do not add prefixes, just write them as is.

Q

What are ionic compounds?

A

These are compounds with a metal and a non metal. The atom donates an electron to another atom.

Q

How do you name ionic compounds?

A

Write the name of the cation (metal), then write the name of the anion (nonmetal). Then, change the end of the anion to “-ide”

Q

How do you name covalent compounds?

A

List down both elements, and change the suffix of the 2nd element to “-ide”. Use prefixes (mono-, di-, tri-, …), except for if there is only one of the first element.
