Attempts by Qing officials to seize British opium and to halt the opium trade in China this led to Britain declaring war however the British naval supremacy led to a crushing defeat for China

A

1842 : abolition of the canton system, 5 treaty ports , $6 million compensation aswell as Britain became the most favoured nation and received Hong Kong

Cause : arrow incident

A

1856 - a ship flying a British flag, registered in Hong Kong was bordered by Chinese officials and the crew were arrested for piracy so Britain protested and declared war on China - trigger for the second opium war

Cause: second opium war

A

1856-60 = following British attacks and the threats to take Beijing , an anglo-French force easily defeated China and an agreement was to be put in place however when France and Britain arrived the cities defences were rebuilt and Chinese saw huge casualties for Britain and France
Though Chinese military were overwhelmed

  • Christian missionaries were permitted to travel freely and spread throughout
  • ten further treaty ports - 4 on the Yangtze River
  • taxes on shipping foreign goods were lowered
  • forgein ships could enter any Chinese port
  • extraterritoriality = total legal power over your territory

What was the consequence of opening up the Yangtze valley

A

Britain established stable conditions nearer to the centres of production and consumption which would cut transit costs and allowed for the navigation of tributaries
However, Chinese outlook and culture lagged behind and the economy remained primarily agricultural and architecture
