Sign test Flashcards
when do you use a sign test?
when looking at paired or related data
the two related pieces of data could come from a repeated measures design (same person is tested twice)
The sign test could also be use with a matched pairs design because participants are paired and therefore count, for the purposes of statistics as one person tested twice
How do you do a sign test?
State a hypothesis:
If a hypothesis is directional then a one tailed test is done
If a hypothesis is non-directional then a two tailed test is done
Record the data and work out the sign:
record each pair of data and record a minus or plus that is relative to your data
Find the calculative value: S is the symbol for the test statistic we are calculating. To do this, we add up the pluses and add up the minus and select the smaller value. (JUST HOW MANY PLUS SIGNS AND MINUS SIGNS THERE ARE)
how do you calculate the critical value?
by calculating the number of participants (excluding any zeros)
How do you then find whether the finding is significant
