what is informed consent?
revealing the true aims of the study. Participants must be given comprehensive information concerning the nature and purpose of the research and their role in it so they can make an informed decision about whether to participate
What is deception?
a participant is not told the true aim of a study and thus cannot give truly informed consent
what can deception lead to?
it can lead people to seeing psychologists as untrustworthy it can also lead to psychological harm
what is the right to withdraw?
Participants can stop participating in a study if they are uncomfortable in any way. This is important in cases where it is not possible to fully give consent.
what is the protection of participants?
During a research study, participants should not experience negative physical or psychological effects i.e embarrass, lower self-esteem
What is considered acceptable in relation to the protection of participants?
if the risk of harm is no greater than a participant would likely experience in ordinary life and if participants are in the same state as before
what is confidentiality?
concerns the communication of personal information from one person to another and the trust that the information will be protected.
Participants and the data gained from them must be kept anonymous unless given their full consent i.e no names in a lab report
