Sig Figs Flashcards
accuracy
the extent to which a measured value agrees with a standard value
-ex: 1.00g is accurate
precision
the degree of exactness of a measurement
-ex: 1.101g is precise (exact)
exact number
infinitely important, obtained when you count objects or use a defined relationship
- ex: 2 soccer balls - ex: 3 horses
measured number
numbers measured with a measuring device
how do you take measurements from instruments with graduations?
always take a guess between the two closest markings
zeros in between two nonzero digits
always significant
zeros to the left of a nonzero digit
never significant
zeros to the right of a nonzero digit
only significant if a decimal is present
sig figs for multiplication & division
the answer cannot have more sig figs than either of the original numbers
sig figs for adding & subtracting
the answer cannot have more digits after the decimal point than either of the original numbers
