SIEVING Flashcards

1
Q

Can you explain the procedure of sieving?

A

firstly, a representative sample which is soil is taken and dried in the oven about 3-4 mins. (ignore this step if it is already dried). Secondly, if the particles are lumped or conglomerated, crush it using pestle and mortar. thirdly, the sample mass is weighed. Fourthly, a stack pf test sieves is prepared in order, which is from largest aperture size at the top, and the smallest at the bottom. A receiver is placed under all sieves to collect samples. Pour sample into the top of the stack of sieves and put the lid on. Time is taken, sieve shaker is placed and clamps is fixed. finally, the shaker is switched on. Once the shaker is stopped, the mass of each sieve and retained soil is measured.

Q

What is the objective of this lab test?

A

to determine the percentage of different grain sizes contained within a soil. it also can determine the distribution of the coarser, larger-sized particles.

Q

How to analyze the data?

A

by plotting the data on Grain Size Distribution Curve which is the relationship between particle size (diameter) and percent passing. from that we can classify the soil according to the curve.
