- Endocrine: impaired glucose regulation, increased appetite/weight gain, hirsutism, hyperlipidaemia
- Cushing’s syndrome: moon face, buffalo hump, striae
- Dermatological: thinning of skin, easy bruising
- Musculoskeletal: osteoporosis, proximal myopathy, avascular necrosis of the femoral head, muscle weakness
- Immunosuppression: increased susceptibility to severe infection, reactivation of tuberculosis
- Psychiatric: insomnia, mania, depression, psychosis
- Gastrointestinal: peptic ulceration, acute pancreatitis
- Ophthalmic: glaucoma, cataracts
- Suppression of growth in children
- Intracranial hypertension
- Neutrophilia

Important information about steroids
A
- DON’T – Don’t stop taking steroids abruptly. There is a risk of adrenal crisis.
- S – Sick Day Rules. (double dose for 2 days when ill)
- T – Treatment Card.
- O – Osteoporosis prevention with bisphosphonates and supplemental calcium and vitamin D.
- P – Proton pump inhibitor for gastric protection.
