Body produces too much ADH

A
- Confusion
- Anorexia
- Nausea
- Concentrated urine

What are two dangerous complications of SIADH?
A
Cerebral oedema
Seizures

How do you diagnose SIADH? (3)
A
- U&E: hyponatremia
- Serum osmolality: DECREASED
- Urine osmolality: INCREASED

How would you treat SIADH? (4)
A
- Restrict fluid
- Slowly correct hyponatremia: salt tablets, IV hypertonic saline
- Diuretics
- Vasopressin receptor antagonists (‘vaptans’)

Why is there no oedema in SIADH? (2)
A
Euvolemic hyponatremia
Na+ levels normal, just distributes into a larger volume of water
