cognitive roots of prejudice
categorization, availability heuristic, and just world phenomenon
categorization
place things into categories to make them easier to understand
availability heuristic
rule we use to make quick cognitive judgements, tend to think of most dramatic examples to make us think that those are normal
just world phenomenon
believe that the world is just; believe that bad things happen to bad people and vice versa. blaming the victim.
milgram’s norm experiment
anxiety prevents us from breaking norms, we need to justify our actions, and context directs our feelings and behavior.
asch study
asked to identify which of three comparison lines matched the standard line. if everyone gives the wrong answer, the subject is more likely to give the wrong answer. demonstrates suggestibility as a form of conformity.
milgram found that obedience is highest when
authority figure is nearby, authority figure is convincing and associated with a powerful institution, victim is depersonalized and/or distant, and disobedience has been modeled by others
conditions that strengthen conformity
one is made to feel incompetent or insecure, the group has at least 3 people, the group is unanimous, one admires the group’s status and attractiveness, one has no prior commitment to a response, the group observers one’s behavior, one’s culture strongly encourages respect for a social standard.
zimbardo’s standford prison experiment
examined the effects of role playing on attitudes and behavior. arbitrarily assigned volunteers to play the role of prisoner or prison guard. role playing has strong influence on beliefs.
