Shoulder Osteology Flashcards
What are the mechanically interrelated articulations?
Sternum, clavicle, ribs, Scapula & Shoulder
What does weakness or reduced/altered activation of any of the mechanical components of the shoulder create?
Global dysfunction for shoulder girdle complex
What are the osteological characteristics of the sternum?
Oval shaped clavicular facets, costal facets, jugular notch, manubrium, body, and xiphoid process
What is the shape of the clavicle?
Shaft is curved: convex medially/concave
What is the biomechanical position of the clavicle with the UE in anatomical position?
long axis lightly above horizontal plane, 20 degrees posterior to frontal
What are the facets in the clavicle?
SC joint, Acromial facet (oval shaped), AC joint
What are the ligaments attached to the clavicle?
- Conoid tubercle (conoid lig)
- trapezoid line (Trapezoid lig)
- Costal tuberosity (costoclavicular ligament)
What is the orientation of the scapula?
Deviated about 30-40 degrees anterior to the frontal plane
What are the three angles of the scapula?
Inferior, superior, lateral
What are the three borders of the scapula?
Medial (vertebral), lateral or axillary border, superior border
What are some osteological features of the scapula?
Root of the spine
Supra/Infra fossa
Spine
Acromion
Clavicular Facet (AC)
Glenoid fossa
Supra/infraglenoid tubercles
coracoid process
subscapular fossa
What is the shape of the mid humerus?
Nearly 1/2 full sphere
What direction does the head of the tubercle face?
Medially and superiorly (Ideally)
What are some osteologic features of the humerus?
Anatomic neck, lesser tubercle, greater tubercle, upper, middle, lower facets, crests, intertubercle groove (aka bicipital groove), deltoid tuberosity
Which tubercle of the humerus is rounded and which is sharper?
Lesser tubercle is sharper
greater tubercle is rounded and has facets
