Shoulder injuries and evaluation Flashcards
Does the shoulder have good or bad bony stability
bad
describe scapulohumeral rhythm
movement of scapula relative to the humerus, for the first 30 degrees of glenhumeral movement the scapula does not move, from 30-90 the scapula upwardly rotates and abducts 1 degree for every 2 degrees of glenhumeral movement, after 90 the ratio is 1 to 1
What two structures could be the cause of a winging scapula
long thoracic nerve injury or serratus anterior weakness
What is joint laxity
when a person can comfortably over extend a joint, because it is normal for this person it is not considered instability
What is joint instability
when there is pain associated with extra movement in a joint
What are the most common directions for shoulder chronic instability
anterior and inferior
What are the signs and symptoms of anterior joint instability
clicking, pain, complain of dead arm during cocking phase, pain posteriorly
What are some signs and symptoms of posterior instability
loss of internal rotation, crepitation, increased laxity, pain anteriorly and posteriorly
What are some signs and symptoms of multidirectional instability
inferior laxity, pain and clicking with arm at side
What is the treatment for chronic instability
scapular stabilization, posture and RTC strengthing
What is impingement
three structures of the shoulder not having enough room to operate between acromion and humeral head
What is impingement often associated with
chronic instability and postural mal-alignment
