Shoulder Girdle Flashcards
Shoulder Girdle
Entire upper extremity (UE) depends on shoulder girdle. It’s only attachment of UE to axial skeleton is via the scapula through the clavicle at the SC joint.
Bones included
Scapula & Clavicle
Sternoclavicular joint
Arthrodial (multiaxial) Provides the same amount of movement posteriorly & anteriorly. Provides more movement superiorly than inferiorly.
Sternoclavicular supporting ligaments
Anterior SC ligament, Posterior SC ligament, Costoclavicular & Interclavicular ligaments
Acromioclavicular
Arthrodial classification, 20- to 30-degree total gliding & rotational motion. Accompanies other shoulder girdle & joint motions
Acromioclavicular supporting ligaments
Coracoclavicular ligaments: Conoid (medial) & trapezoid (lateral), Superior acromioclavicular ligament, Inferior acromioclavicular ligament
Scapulothoracic
Movement depends on SC & AC joints which allow
the scapula to move - no ligamentous support; supporting via muscles
Shoulder girdle movements
Abduction, Adduction, Downward rotation, Upward rotation, depression, elevation
Shoulder girdle functions
Stabilize scapula, contract to move girdle & enhance movement of upper extremity,
Movements of Scapula
Lateral tilt (abduction), medial tilt (adduction), anterior tilt (upward), posterior tilt (doward)
Shoulder girdle muscles
Trapezius, rhomboid, levator scapula, serratus anterior, pectoralis minor. Do not attach to humerus & do not cause shoulder joint actions.
